You are eligible if you are:

  • A permanent resident* of Canada
    *A permanent resident is someone who has been given permanent resident status by immigrating to Canada, but is not a Canadian citizen. Permanent residents are citizens of other countries. (
  • OR
  • A Canadian citizen born outside of Canada
  • OR
  • A protected person as defined in Section 95 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act who is legally entitled to work in Canada and Nova Scotia
  • AND
  • Facing barriers to employment. Barriers may include non-transferable credentials, lack of Canadian work experience and linguistic barriers.

Public Programs Assistant

Reports to: Public Programs Manager

Wages: $12.35 per hour

Hours: 37.5 hours a week with 30 minutes (or 1 hour) unpaid lunch break. As the Museum operates 7 days a week, the work week may include Saturdays and/or Sundays.

Duration: Six month, hourly position starting in May 1, 2018 and ending in October 31, 2018.

Position Summary

The purpose of this position is to assist the Public Programs Manager and Coordinator in the administration, coordination and delivery of public programs.


  • Identifies potential community group partners for public programs
  • Maintains attendance statistics and contact lists for public programs
  • Helps coordinate and deliver the Diversity Spotlight program
  • Coordinates the Film Selection Committee for Diversity Spotlight
  • Manages the Museum’s presence at the Nova Scotia Multicultural Festival
  • Coordinates the Public Programs booth at the Annual Public Meeting
  • Assists with public events such as Canada Day and Nocturne
  • Researches public program strategies and potential audience
  • Assists with other programming duties as required

Skills Required

  • Comfortable interacting with a wide variety of people: community partners, Museum staff and the public
  • Reliable, responsible
  • Ability to follow instructions and work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Communicates well with the public, both in person and on the telephone
  • Good command of the English language: spoken, comprehension, written
  • High quality of customer service
  • Interest in Canadian and world history
  • Post-secondary education in Museum Studies, History, Anthropology, Education or Marketing and Communications is an asset
  • Ability to communicate in French is a definite asset
