Katharina Klein (née Emrich) immigrated to Canada from Austria with her mother and siblings on board MS Seven Seas, arriving in Quebec City on December 7, 1955. They then travelled by train to Windsor, Ontario where they met Katharina's aunt and her family, as well as friends from their home in Ober-Eidisch, Romania who had immigrated prior to them. Katharina's two other brothers, who had also immigrated a few years prior to their arrival, were also in Windsor. Katharina and her family were Displaced Persons from Romania who relocated to Schwanenstadt, Austria to avoid the advancing Soviet Army. Katharina's mother decided to emigrate based on accounts of the lifestyle in Canada by her sister, who had immigrated to Canada before the Second World War.

As part of her story Vera describes a homesick Australian who could not afford passage home. The man robbed a bank in a deliberately inept way in order to be arrested and deported. The deportation appears to have been managed sympathetically by Canadian authorities.
