Going Home– In partnership with Leave Out ViolencE (LOVE)

Leave Out ViolencE (LOVE) is an award winning, not-for-profit, grass roots youth organization that is an effective means of social change, providing hope, motivation and opportunity to thousands of young people. The exhibition, titled Going Home is a collection of black and white photographs taken by youth, which explore the idea of what home is, what it should be, and some of the struggles and triumphs of finding a place to call home.

Cuban Connections – In partnership with Nova Scotia Cuba Artists Collective

Come explore how cultural customs can bring cultural richness to communities all over the world in the Cuban Connections exhibition. Discover the connection between Cuban Canadians and their Cuban roots and learn how elements of culture travel with people and are sustained and adapted to new environments. Complementing the exhibition will be artwork by Cuban artists as well as a children’s art display.

Vietnamese Boat PeopleVietnamese Boat People

Vietnamese Boat People is about honouring the past, celebrating the present, and inspiring future generations. The Vietnamese Association of Nova Scotia brings a collection of personal stories, photographs and artifacts, documenting the mass departure of Vietnamese refugees after the fall of Saigon in 1975. The exhibition reveals the strength and resilience of Vietnamese Canadians and is the first of its kind in Nova Scotia.

Portraits of Injustice

Carol Morrison. Kimy Pernía Domicó, 2009, Acrylic. 24” x 36” The Portraits of Injustice exhibition shows how a small group of dedicated community volunteers acting locally has joined with millions of other voices to help make a change globally. In Portraits of Injustice,  letters written on behalf of victims of injustice are displayed alongside portraits of the victims painted by local artist Carol Morrison.

We are: Expressions of family a queer experience

We are is a community based art exhibit that features artworks by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and queer (LGBTQ) parents and their children that express and represent their experiences of being a family.


Art-Celebra

Art-Celebra highlights art by Polish Canadians in Nova Scotia. The opening event will be October 25 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Ralph and Rose Chiodo Harbourside Gallery at Pier 21. The exhibit is presented in partnership with the Nova Scotia Society of Polish Artists.


Flamenco in Canada!

Celebrate the history and experience of Flamenco in Canada.  Featuring stories and photographs submitted by Canadians from across the country, this Community Presents exhibit provides a glimpse into the vibrant influence of Flamenco culture in Canada. Download the Poster (PDF 500KB)


Innocents of War

Local high school students explore the topic of children in conflict around the world in Innocents of War. The exhibit included an “I want to live in a world where…” activity where visitors were able to participate and contribute their ideas. Presented in partnership with the Red Cross’ Humanitarian Issues Program in Halifax. Download the Poster (PDF 540KB)


Asian Heritage Art Exhibit

In celebration of Asian Heritage Month, four Asian-Canadian artists – Mark Maestro, Golumba Kim, Teresa Cho and Lei Jiang – were featured, whose media ranged from acrylic and watercolour paintings to Chinese calligraphy painted on traditional scrolls. Greeks of Halifax

Costumes, ancient artefact replicas and a photographic exhibit depicted the fascinating historical stories of Greece and the Greek Community in Halifax. Organized with the Greek Community of Halifax. Download the Poster (PDF 585KB)


Spanish Rhythms of Dance

Local artist Maria Valverde was presented in conjunction with the Flamenco in February celebrations. Valverde draws inspiration from her natural environment and Spanish heritage, often intertwining the two, expressing a love of humanity and nature. Presented in partnership with the Flamenco Festival Atlantic’s Flamenco in February Committee.


Global Chinese New Year

A group exhibit was created, featuring artwork by Joanne Chilton, Monika Wright, Anne Launcelott and others, that celebrated the Year of the Rat. Presented in partnership with the Mu Lan Chinese Cultural Center.
