Junior System Administrator

Reports to: Information Technology Manager

Wages: $12.35 per hour

Hours: 37.5 hours a week with 30 minutes (or 1 hour) unpaid lunch break. As the Museum operates 7 days a week, the work week may include Saturdays and/or Sundays.

Duration: Six month, hourly position starting in May 1, 2018 and ending in October 31, 2018.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Information Technology Manager, the Junior System Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day support and troubleshooting of all Museum software and equipment (desktops, laptops, printers, etc.). The Junior System Administrator will perform project tasks as identified by the IT Manager and is responsible for completing all necessary paperwork associated with documenting and maintaining the integrity of the IT infrastructure for the organization, on behalf of the IT Manager. The Junior System Administrator will be results-oriented and have the demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize workflow.

Responsibilities

Technical Support

  • Performs the day-to-day hardware and software maintenance duties as required on any IT system and/or computer across the organization
  • Troubleshoots and corrects hardware/software computer and network problems and/or concerns
  • Assists with the maintenance and operation of all IT systems across the organization
  • Ensures all daily and/or weekly tasks including backups are completed successfully
  • Undertakes all project tasks as assigned by the IT Manager
  • Performs other duties as required

Administration

  • Prepares reports accurately and in a timely manner, as needed
  • Develops user guides with procedures and processes for end-users
  • Provides IT information and support to other departments as needed by using knowledge of the organization’s IT infrastructure
  • Documents and regularly updates procedures and processes as required
  • Manages multiple deliverables and deadlines appropriately
  • Exercises independent thought and judgment over resolution of technical issues and/or problems

Skills Required

  • Diploma in Information Technology with an emphasis in Systems Management/Networking or related field of study and/or experience in a similar role
  • Very proficient in troubleshooting techniques
  • Must have a knowledge of Windows or Linux System Administration
  • Must have a knowledge of Microsoft Office and related products
  • Must have a knowledge of PC hardware and software
  • Very proficient in networking – hardware and software
  • Proven ability to develop procedures, process and implement effectively and efficiently
  • Ability to plan, organize and manage time effectively
  • Able to multitask effectively
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proven ability to be self-motivated, independent and effectively prioritize work flow
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimum supervision and to develop working relationships with all members of the organization creating a strong team environment
  • Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 kgs
  • Good verbal and written communication skills

Skills and Qualifications - Desired

  • The ability to communicate in both official languages, oral and written, is an asset
  • Experience with specialty programs such as ERP Software, donor relationship management software, etc. is an asset
  • Experience in a server-based environment is an asset

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

  • Work is in an office environment and/or a server environment and will require long periods at a desk, reading lengthy documents, and time in front of a computer
  • Will require irregular hours (evenings, weekends)
  • Be a part of a regular on-call support rotation
