Story Text:

At the age of 18 and as an only child, I decided to Immigrate to Canada from the Netherlands.
I had family that immigrated earlier living in London Ontario and London was to be my destination. Before I received my Visa as a landed immigrant I had to obtain a sponsor, have knowledge of one of our two official languages, as well as some knowledge of the country and its History.

I travelled on a Freighter from Rotterdam to New York, there were just 6 passengers. The plan was to take the train to Michigan and visit for a few days with friends, however I had the fortune of meeting a Doctor and his wife on board, they resided in New York and invited me to stay for a week before they put me on the train to Michigan, I spent a few days there and back on the train to London, crossing the border in Sarnia.

I started work in the Dairy industry, first in a creamery and after that in a Dairy, in between I married my wife Gwen, now married 61 years, and we have 2 children, a boy and a girl. The family grew with 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

I had the good fortune to start my career during a time when one could succeed with hard work and willing to learn. Over time I had the opportunity to make a change to management and a move to Toronto.

Eventually we moved on to the Maritimes, where again thru hard work and perseverance I became a Vice President in a major Dairy and retired at age 60. Now 82 I have been enjoying the good life with my wife Gwen and over the years have had the good fortune of being able to travel the world.
