Pier 21 Society Volunteer Position: Tour Guide / Interpreter
Position Summary:
Provide guided tours of Pier 21’s Exhibition Hall to the general public as well as to special groups including Pier 21 Alumni and education groups.
Responsibilities:
- Animate museum space proactively.
- Deliver 25-minute guided tour of Pier 21’s Exhibition Hall every hour on the half hour to the general public.
- Provide guided tours of the Exhibition Hall to special groups such as Pier 21 Alumni and education groups.
- Encourage Pier 21 alumni and family members to visit the Scotiabank Research Centre.
- Continuously develop knowledge of the content of the museum through regular reading of Tour Resource Binder as well as relevant books and articles.
- Monitor and assist visitors on an as needed basis.
- Report any concerns to the Manager of Visitor Services or to the Visitor Services Team Leader.
Required Skill/Experience:
- Excellent command of the English or French language.
- Excellent public speaking skills.
- Genuine interest and knowledge relating to Canadian immigration history and World War II.
- Punctuality.
- Approachability.
Previous teaching/interpretation/public speaking experience considered an asset.
Occurrence
Time/Place: Work must occur during the hours of operation of Pier 21’s Exhibition Hall.
Length of Commitment:Flexible, minimum of 3 hours per week. Tours generally occur every hour on the half hour.
Working Conditions: Work occurs in the Rudolph P. Bratty Exhibition Hall. Standing and walking required.

Training & Supervision
Training/Preparation: Museum welcome and general orientation provided by the Volunteer coordinator. Tasks specific training provided by the Manager of Museum Visitor Services or by the Museum Visitor Services Team Leader.
Supervision: This position reports the Manager of Museum Visitor Services, or to the Museum Visitor Services Team Leader.
