Pier 21 Society Volunteer Position: Education Communications Facilitator
The Education Communications Facilitator assists with maintaining active communication between the Education Services Department and other Pier 21 Departments, educators and the community.
Responsibilities:
- Communicates regularly with supervisor.
- Participates in regular monthly department meetings and training sessions.
- Creates and maintains contact databases.
- Writes quarterly school newsletter for educators (drafts must be approved by supervisor before being sent).
- Writes draft blurbs on upcoming education events for the Pier 21 Communications Department.
- Sends confirmation notices to teachers who have booked tours and workshops.
- Sends thank you notes and feedback forms to educators after their visit.
- Compiles student/educator feedback for statistics.
- Periodically interviews educators and students visiting Pier 21.
- Writes draft documents relating to the Education Services Department with guidance from the Manager of Education Services both for internal and external communications purposes.
Required Skills/Experience:
- Fluent in English.
- Written French preferred.
- Experience with creating databases/spreadsheets an asset.
- Familiar with E-mail, Word, Internet, Excel, and Word Processing.
- Experience using InDesign, PowerPoint, Photoshop, and Databases an asset.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently.
Occurrence
Time/Place: Shifts can occur any time Tuesday-Saturday from 9am-5pm. Pier 21 Canada’s Immigration Museum is located at 1055 Marginal Road, Halifax, NS. The Education Communication Facilitator will be working under the supervision of the Manager of Education Services.
All Education Services Department staff and volunteers are required to attend monthly meetings/training sessions on the first Wednesday of the month from 1pm-4pm.
Length of Commitment: Education Communications Facilitators should be committed to a minimum period of 6 months or to a minimum of 30 shifts depending on the frequency of shifts. Volunteers are always encouraged to remain longer than the minimum commitment.

Training & Supervision
Training/Preparation: Museum welcome and general orientation provided by the Visitor Services Team Leader. Task specific training provided by the Manager of Education Services.
Supervision: This position reports to the Manager of Education Services. Volunteers are required to sign in and out during every shift.
